Indian Frybread Recipe

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Gradually add warm water to the dry ingredients. Start with about 3/4 cup of water and mix. Add more water as needed to form a soft, slightly sticky dough.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for a few minutes until it becomes smooth.
  4. Divide the dough into small portions and roll them into balls (about the size of a golf ball).
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a deep skillet or frying pan over medium-high heat. You’ll need enough oil to submerge the dough.
  6. Flatten each dough ball into a thin, round disk using your hands or a rolling pin. Be sure not to make them too thick; they should be about 1/4 inch thick or less.
  7. Carefully place the flattened dough into the hot oil one at a time. Fry until the frybread puffs up and becomes golden brown on one side, then flip and fry the other side until golden brown. This should take about 2-3 minutes per side.
  8. Remove the frybread from the oil using a slotted spoon and place it on a paper towel-lined plate to drain any excess oil.
  9. Serve the Indian frybread hot with your choice of toppings. It’s delicious with honey, powdered sugar, jam, or even as a base for savory toppings like taco ingredients.
